Preface to Concepts of Zoology – Hawaiʻi Edition
Preface to Concepts of Zoology – Hawaiʻi Edition, by Alyssa MacDonald and Anuschka Faucci
In this survey text, directed at those not majoring in zoology, we dispel the assumption that a little learning is a dangerous thing. We hope that by skimming the surface of a very deep subject, zoology, we may inspire you to drink more deeply and make more informed choices relating to your health, the environment, politics, and the greatest subject that all of us are entwined in, life itself.
Adaptations to the original textbook Concepts of Biology by OpenStax College include:
- Removed the original Chapters 5 (Photosynthesis) and 14 (Diversity of Plants)
- Added Career in action profiles by scientists originally from Hawaiʻi or doing research in Hawaiʻi.
- Added some sections on sustainability and examples of habitats and animals of Hawaiʻi.
- Replaced or added images and examples that represent Hawaiʻi and its fauna and ecosystems.
- Chapter 15 (Diversity of Animals):
- Added more organismal information, mostly from General Biology 2e (OpenStax) which is shared under a CC BY 4.0 license and was authored, remixed, and/or curated by OpenStax.
- Divided content into more subchapters for improved navigation
- Updated some of the major taxonomy that has changed over the last few years according to the Catalogue of Life (COL) and World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), both accessed in June 2025.
