About the Cover Art
The anatomical heart is one of the most frequently depicted references to anatomy and physiology in Western culture. The heart-shaped kalo leaf is symbolic of a plant that is at the heart of Native Hawaiian culture. Referenced in the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian Creation Chant, kalo is ancestors, it is medicine, and it is sustenance. These are the focal point of the cover of this open educational resource. Also integrated into the cover design are visual references to chemistry, an important facet of this subject, as well as the Lōkahi Triangle, which represents mental, spiritual, and physical harmony.
